High School Musical Live Show Stuns London

Is Broadway Next for Box Office Shocker?

This past week, performances have begun in London for High School Musical Live on Stage, based on the hit Disney television movie that has ignited the re-birth of the “Let’s put on a show”-genre. According to a report in London’s Telegraph, the box office performance of the Disney stage version has surpassed even the wildest of wild expectations. To quote from the article by Anita Singh: “No production aimed at children has ever seen such demand in Britain. Producers have described the rush for tickets as “nothing short of astonishing.”
How astonishing is “nothing short,” the article says that the London production has already generated more than 20 million pounds in ticket sales. “The £20 million takings cover the touring production, which opened in January and is playing at regional theatres, and advance ticket sales for the sister production which opens in London on Saturday night with a star-studded premiere at the Hammersmith Apollo.” That is just under $40 million U.S. dollars. While there are no plans announced for Disney to take a similar production to Broadway…there is every reason to believe that given the high demand and profitablity…Broadway could be next.

Zac Efron in Creative Recreation Kaplan Black and Ray-Ban Shades

Zac Efron was recently spotted wearing a nice simple pair of Creative Recreation Kaplan Black sneakers ($125) with his favorite shades by Ray-Ban ($139). During the auditions, Sharpay and her brother, Ryan, perform one of Kelsi's original songs, "What I've Been Looking For", but with an upbeat arrangement. When Kelsi tells Sharpay that she imagined the song to be much slower, Sharpay belittles her and Kelsi retreats. After auditions, Kelsi is approached by Troy and Gabriella, who tell her she does not have to be intimidated by Sharpay. She offers to show them how the song they sang is supposed to sound. Troy and Gabriella sing the duet ballad and Ms. Darbus, who had re-entered the auditorium, gives them a callback. Kelsi works with Troy and Gabriella to ensure that they beat out Sharpay and Ryan for the lead roles. The second film shows Kelsi, Troy, Gabriella, and their friends working at the Lava Springs country club, which is owned by Sharpay's family. Kelsi's job is playing the piano in the dining room. She is also the rehearsal pianist for Sharpay. In the third film, Kelsi goes to prom with Ryan and formed a relationship with him. do you know The Sharpettes? know them more!

The Sharpettes

When Sharpay Needs a Little Backup, These Girls Fire Up the Attitude, Pile on the Accessories and Get to Work

If there's one thing a prima donna needs—besides a lapdog and lip gloss—it's a posse. Which is why director Kenny Ortega decided to give Sharpay her very own "Sharpettes," played by Kelli Baker, 17 (the ginger-haired one), McCall Clark, 16 plays Emma (the blonde one), and Tanya Michelle, 23 (the African-American one) . Mostly they're girls who get to wear outrageous outfits—"I still have glitter in my teeth," jokes Clark of the high-glitz getups—and make grand entrances with Sharpay. "Ashley was so much fun, she treated us like friends," says Baker. Shivering in 40-degree temperatures (it was March!) for night shoots by the pool was a bonding experience for them all—as were the off-hours manicures and pool parties. "We should have had pillow fights," says Michelle of the shoot. "It felt like we were at a sleepover."

The Sharpettes appear in "Fabulous", "Humuhumunukanuka'apua'a", "You Are the Music In Me (Sharpay Version)", "Everyday" and "All For One."

About HSM 3 costumes

Nikki Katz , recently had the opportunity to speak with Caroline B. Marx, acclaimed costume designer for the recent hit film, High School Musical 3! Caroline was gracious enough to chat with me about her concepts behind the various characters, where you can get their clothes, and even what’s hot for spring and prom season! This first post covers the film. Stay tuned tomorrow for the second portion with upcoming fashion tips and more specifics about each character!
I started out by asking Caroline about her process for figuring out costumes for a film.
“Basically my job is to create the overall look of the film, and then start delving into each specific character,” she said. “The one thing I think you’ll really notice in High School Musical 3 is that we really made the big screen version of it. There’s definite character definition and everyone has their own individual personality.
“It was kind of a combination of speaking to Kenny Ortega and seeing what his vision was for the overall look for the film, then I brought my ideas to the table as to how I saw each character. Then I talked to the actors, which was really, really important for this film because they’ve been playing these characters for years so I wanted to make sure that we were really true to the character and be true to the fans. So what I tried to do was enhance them and give them more definition. And with this one I feel we brought a strong fashion element to it.”
